How to Play Rook
- Kentucky Discard Rook is played by four players in two fixed partnerships (partners usually sit across from each other). Use one column per partnership.
- Count only point cards after each hand: 5 = 5, 10 = 10, 14 = 10, 1 = 15, and the Rook card = 20. The deck holds 180 card points.
- Partnerships bid for the right to name trump and must capture at least their bid in card points. Mark which side won the bid and enter that side’s bid amount.
- If the bidding partnership captures at least their bid in card points, they score +bid. If they fall short, they score −bid. Defenders score 0 for that hand.
- If the bidders make their bid and capture all 180 card points (shutting out the defenders), add a 200-point set bonus to their hand score.
- The first partnership to reach 500 total points wins the match.
Tips & Strategy for playing Rook
- Agree on nest size, minimum opening bid, and whether the Rook counts as trump before the first deal.
- Tally 5s, 10s, 14s, 1s, and the Rook on paper first — enter one card-point total per partnership column on the scorecard.
- Only the bidding partnership’s column receives +bid or −bid for that hand; defenders enter their card points with bid set to 0.
