How to Play Shanghai Rummy
- Over ten deals, each player must lay down a specific contract of sets (three or more matching ranks) and runs (four or more consecutive cards in one suit) before laying off extra cards.
- Contracts escalate each deal — from two sets of three in round one through three runs of five in round ten. Each round has a different contract that all players must complete before they can go out.
- When you satisfy your contract and empty your hand, you go out and score 0 penalty points for that deal.
- All other players add up the penalty value of unmelded cards left in hand and enter that total for the round.
- Scoring: 2–9 = 5 points each, 10–king = 10 each, ace = 15, joker = 25.
- After all ten deals are completed, the player with the lowest cumulative penalty total wins.
