How to Play Rummikub

  • CheckmarkTwo to six players draw 14 tiles each. The first meld must be sets from your own rack worth at least 30 points. A group is three or four tiles of the same number in different colors. A run is three or more consecutive numbers in one color. The 1 is always low and does not follow 13.
  • CheckmarkA game ends when a player plays every tile on their rack. That player scores the sum of the tiles left on the other racks as a positive number. Each other player scores the tiles still on their own rack as a negative number. Number tiles count at face value. A joker left on a rack counts as 30 points.
  • CheckmarkIf the pool is empty and no one can play, the player with the lowest rack total wins that game. Each other player enters the winner’s rack total minus their own rack total. That number is negative. The winner enters those differences added together as a positive score.
  • CheckmarkAgree how many rounds to play before you start. In the booklet a round is one game per player, so the game count for one round matches the number of players. This card totals the points from every game, and the highest score leads. The booklet also counts game wins and names the player with the most wins the winner, using the point total when the win counts are tied.

Tips & Strategy for playing Rummikub

  • CheckmarkBefore you type the scores, add the negative racks together. That sum, written as a positive number, is the score for the player who went out.
  • CheckmarkA joker still on your rack is worth 30 if someone else goes out, so playing it is often safer than saving it for a later set.
  • CheckmarkYour first meld has to come from your own rack and total at least 30 before you can add tiles to sets already on the table.

Frequently asked questions about Rummikub

How do you score a Rummikub game when someone goes out?

The player who empties their rack scores the sum of the tiles left on every other rack as a positive number. Each other player scores the tiles left on their own rack as a negative number. Number tiles count at face value, from 1 to 13. A joker still on a rack counts as 30. The winner’s positive score should match the other scores added together, ignoring the minus signs.

How do you score Rummikub when the pool runs out?

If no tiles are left to draw and nobody can play, the player with the lowest rack total wins that game. Each other player enters the winner’s rack total minus their own rack total. That number is negative. The winner enters those differences added together as a positive score.

Who wins a Rummikub session on this scorecard?

This scorecard adds every game and ranks players by the highest point total. The rules in the box also count a game win for the player with the positive score on that row. When those win counts are tied, the booklet uses this point total to name the winner. When one player has more game wins, the booklet names that player the winner.

How does this Rummikub scorecard work?
