How to Play Canasta
- Classic Canasta is played by four players in two partnerships (partners usually sit across from each other). Use one column per partnership.
- After each hand, compute each side’s net score for that deal: add the value of cards in your melds on the table, add bonuses for natural canastas (500 each), mixed canastas (300 each), red threes (100 each when valid), and going out (100, plus 100 more for a concealed go-out if it applies), then subtract the value of any cards still held that did not count toward melds.
- When counting melded cards for points: jokers 50 each; aces and twos (except scoring red threes separately) 20 each; kings through 8s 10 each; sevens through fours and black threes 5 each.
- Red threes have special placement and replacement rules in live play; when they count toward your score, include them in that hand’s total (commonly 100 each for valid red threes on your side).
- The first partnership to reach 5,000 total points wins the match (many groups use exactly 5,000; change the target in your house rules if needed).
Tips & Strategy for playing Canasta
- Agree how many decks, initial draw, and freezing the pack work before the first deal so both sides score each hand the same way.
- Tally melds, canastas and red threes on paper first if the hand is busy — enter one net number per column on the scorecard.
- Watching the stock and discard pile helps you estimate when a side might go out and how big the last-hand swing could be.
