How to Play Whist
- Whist is a trick-taking game for four players in two partnerships (partners usually sit across from each other). Use one column per partnership.
- Each player receives thirteen cards from a standard 52-card deck. The last card dealt face up sets the trump suit for that deal.
- Players must follow suit when able. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless trump is played — highest trump wins.
- Score one point for each trick your partnership wins above the book of six. Enter tricks won per deal; the scorecard applies the points automatically.
- In many casual games, play to 7 points. Play additional rubbers by continuing to add deal rows.

- Confirm how trump is chosen before you score — most casual games use the last card dealt, but house rules can differ.
- Count tricks as you play so each partnership’s entry adds up to thirteen before you move to the next deal.

What is “the book” in Whist scoring?
Only tricks above the book of six count — if your side wins eight tricks, you score 2 points (8 − 6). Six or fewer tricks scores zero for that deal.
How many columns should we use at the table?
Use one column per partnership (North–South and East–West). Four players sit at the table; partners enter their side’s tricks for each deal.

The first partnership to reach 7 points wins the rubber.
