How to Play Liverpool Rummy
- Over seven deals, each player must lay down a specific contract of sets (three or more matching ranks, also called books) and runs (four or more consecutive cards in one suit) before laying off extra cards and going out.
- Contracts escalate each deal: two sets of three; one set and one run of four; two runs of four; three sets of three; two sets and one run of four; one set and two runs of four; then one run of seven. All players chase the same contract each round.
- Deal 10 cards each for the first four rounds and 12 cards each for the last three. Use two decks with jokers for 3–4 players, or three decks for larger groups.
- When you satisfy your contract and empty your hand, you go out and score 0 penalty points for that deal.
- All other players add up the penalty value of unmelded cards left in hand and enter that total for the round.
- Scoring: 2–9 = 5 points each, 10–king = 10 each, ace = 15, joker = 15. An exact cut of the deck often awards −50; starting a meld you cannot finish usually adds +50.
- After all seven deals are completed, the player with the lowest cumulative penalty total wins.
Tips & Strategy for playing Liverpool Rummy
- Buying a discard costs an extra stock card — save buys for cards that complete your contract.
- Lay your contract as soon as you can so you can lay off extras and go out before opponents pile up penalty cards.
- Dump aces and jokers early when you can — they cost 15 points each if you are caught with them when someone goes out.
Frequently asked questions about Liverpool Rummy
Who scores zero in Liverpool Rummy each round?
The player who goes out (lays their contract and empties their hand) scores 0 for that deal; everyone else enters the penalty value of cards still in hand.
Do all players play the same contract each round?
Yes. In each deal every player attempts the same contract. The contract changes only after the deal ends, following the standard seven-round sequence.
How are Liverpool Rummy cards worth points?
Common casual scoring: 2s–9s are 5 points each, 10s through kings are 10, and aces and jokers are 15. Enter each player’s total leftover for the round (include −50 for an exact cut or +50 for a false meld if your table uses those rules).
