How to Play Hand and Foot
- Hand and Foot is usually four players in two partnerships (partners often sit across from each other). Use one column per side; for other player counts, adapt columns the way your group prefers.
- After each deal, compute each partnership’s net score: count positive points for melded cards and completed books, add any agreed bonuses such as going out, then subtract negative points for cards still held that did not count toward melds.
- Card values and bonuses vary by edition and house rules. Most groups award fixed bonuses for clean and dirty books, use agreed values for wild cards and jokers, and subtract the value of unmelded cards remaining in players’ hands or feet at the end of the deal.
- Play melds from the hand first; when a player empties the hand they pick up the foot and continue melding until someone goes out and the deal is scored.
- The first partnership whose running total reaches the match goal wins; totals update automatically as you enter each deal.
Tips & Strategy for playing Hand and Foot
- Confirm how many decks, wild piles, clean vs dirty book bonuses, and red/black threes work before scoring so both sides enter each deal the same way.
- Sketch melds, books, and leftover cards on paper during a busy deal, then type one net number per team for that row.
- Note who went out and whether it was a flush-style finish so bonuses are folded into the correct partnership’s net for that deal.
Frequently asked questions about Hand and Foot
How do you keep score on this Hand and Foot scorecard?
Each partnership enters one net number per deal: add points for cards melded in valid sets and runs plus any clean or wild book bonuses your rules use, then subtract the value of unmelded cards still left in players’ hands or feet.
When do the foot cards count toward the score?
The foot is a second pile you pick up after playing your initial hand; most groups only score those cards once they are melded or as penalties if the deal ends before you empty both piles. Fold that into the same net total you enter for the deal.
What score wins Hand and Foot, and what about cards left over?
Matches are commonly played to 5,000 total points for a side — the first partnership to reach the target wins. When someone goes out, many tables also subtract the opponents’ remaining unmelded cards from their score for that deal; include that in the net you type.
How does this Hand and Foot scorecard work?
Enter scores in the rows for each hand, hole, or round — the scorecard updates running totals and highlights the leader automatically. You can add players, rename them, and keep the sheet open for the whole session.
