How to Play Pinochle
- Classic partnership Pinochle is played by four players in two fixed partnerships (partners usually sit across from each other). Use one column per partnership.
- After each hand, compute each side’s net score for that deal: add meld points your partnership showed during play, then add trick points from cards won (aces 11, tens 10, kings 4, queens 3, jacks 2, plus 10 for winning the last trick). Enter one combined total per column.
- Common meld values: trump run A-10-K-Q-J (150), royal marriage in trump (40), common marriage in a plain suit (20), pinochle Q♠ plus J♦ (40), aces around (100), kings around (80), queens around (60), jacks around (40). Double-deck tables often double these values — agree before the first deal.
- Partnerships bid for the right to name trump and must meet their bid with melds plus tricks combined. If your group deducts unmet bids, subtract that penalty from the hand total before entering it on the scorecard.
- The first partnership to reach 500 total points wins the match (many double-deck groups use 500; single-deck groups often play to 250 — change the target in your house rules if needed).
Tips & Strategy for playing Pinochle
- Agree single- or double-deck, passing rules, and whether around-melds must be shown before the first trick before the opening bid.
- Tally melds and trick points on paper first if the hand is busy — enter one net number per column on the scorecard.
- Note which aces and tens have been played — they carry most of the trick points in every hand.
