How to Play Spades
- Each hand, every player bids how many tricks they expect to win before play begins.
- Players take turns playing one card per trick; the highest card of the led suit wins unless trumps are played.
- If you make your bid, score 10 points per trick bid plus 1 point for each overtrick.
- If you fail to make your bid, lose 10 points per trick bid as a penalty.
- Each overtrick is a sandbag. Every time your running bag count reaches another 10 bags, take a −100 penalty.
- The player with the highest total score after all hands wins.
Tips & Strategy for playing Spades
- Bid honestly based on your hand strength — overbidding risks sandbag penalties that cost far more.
- Save your high trumps for critical tricks; don't waste them early when you can discard low cards.
- Watch overtricks closely — approaching 10 total bags is a major risk that costs −100 points.
- Avoid handing opponents easy overtricks when they are close to a bag penalty.
