How to Play Pitch
- Auction Pitch is a classic Pitch card game, usually played cutthroat by 2–7 players (best with 4). Each player is dealt six cards and uses one column on the scorecard.
- Players bid 1–4 for the right to name trump (a bid of 4 is a “smudge”). The high bidder becomes the pitcher and leads the first trick to establish the trump suit.
- Four points are awarded each hand in order: High, Low, Jack, and Game. Game goes to the player with the highest captured card-pip value (10=10, Ace=4, King=3, Queen=2, Jack=1).
- Non-bidders score whatever points they capture. The pitcher scores their points if they make the bid, or is set back (subtract the bid, entering a negative) if they fall short.
- The first player to reach the target wins — 11 points in cutthroat play (some groups use 7 or 21). House rules determine ties when multiple players reach the target on the same hand.
Tips & Strategy for playing Pitch
- Agree your target (7, 11, or 21) and whether a successful smudge wins outright before the first bid.
- Tally captured 10s, Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks each hand — the Game point often decides close deals.
- When a player is set back, note it so everyone remembers they went “in the hole”, then enter the negative score on the scorecard.

How do you keep score in Pitch?

What does it mean to be set back?
