How to Play Pitch

  • CheckmarkAuction Pitch is a classic Pitch card game, usually played cutthroat by 2–7 players (best with 4). Each player is dealt six cards and uses one column on the scorecard.
  • CheckmarkPlayers bid 1–4 for the right to name trump (a bid of 4 is a “smudge”). The high bidder becomes the pitcher and leads the first trick to establish the trump suit.
  • CheckmarkFour points are awarded each hand in order: High, Low, Jack, and Game. Game goes to the player with the highest captured card-pip value (10=10, Ace=4, King=3, Queen=2, Jack=1).
  • CheckmarkNon-bidders score whatever points they capture. The pitcher scores their points if they make the bid, or is set back (subtract the bid, entering a negative) if they fall short.
  • CheckmarkThe first player to reach the target wins — 11 points in cutthroat play (some groups use 7 or 21). House rules determine ties when multiple players reach the target on the same hand.

Tips & Strategy for playing Pitch

  • CheckmarkAgree your target (7, 11, or 21) and whether a successful smudge wins outright before the first bid.
  • CheckmarkTally captured 10s, Aces, Kings, Queens and Jacks each hand — the Game point often decides close deals.
  • CheckmarkWhen a player is set back, note it so everyone remembers they went “in the hole”, then enter the negative score on the scorecard.

Frequently asked questions about Pitch

How do you keep score in Pitch?

Four points are on offer each hand — High (highest trump dealt), Low (lowest trump dealt), Jack (Jack of trumps captured in a trick), and Game (most card-pip value captured: 10=10, Ace=4, King=3, Queen=2, Jack=1). Enter each player’s final score change for the hand.

What does it mean to be set back?

The bidder must capture at least as many points as they bid. If they fall short they are “set back” and lose the bid amount — enter that as a negative number for the hand. Non-bidders always score whatever points they captured.

What score wins Pitch?

Cutthroat (every-player-for-themselves) Pitch is usually played to 11 points — the first player to reach the target wins. Some groups play to 7 for a quick game, or 21 in partnerships; adjust the target in your house rules if needed.

How does this Pitch scorecard work?

Enter scores in the rows for each hand, hole, or round — the scorecard updates running totals and highlights the leader automatically. You can add players, rename them, and keep the sheet open for the whole session.

Can I use ScorecardGO to score Pitch on mobile?

Yes. ScorecardGO is built for phones and tablets: large tap targets, readable tables, and layouts that fit narrow screens so you can score Pitch wherever you're playing.

Yes. Your scorecard works offline when the page is loaded, and changes sync when you are back online so you do not lose progress mid-game.
