The upper section bonus is one of the most searched Yahtzee scoring topics. In standard play, if your upper section total (ones through sixes) reaches 63 or more, you add an extra 35 points to your score.
How the upper section is scored
Each row scores the sum of dice showing that number only:
- Three 4s in the fours row = 12 points
- No sixes in the sixes row = 0 points (you must still use the row)
Add all six rows to get your upper section subtotal.
Why 63 is the target
If you score exactly three of each number (3×1 + 3×2 + 3×3 + 3×4 + 3×5 + 3×6), you reach 63. That is the usual benchmark for earning the bonus.
You can still get the bonus with weaker rows if stronger rows make up the difference—for example, four sixes and a zero in ones can still push you over 63.
The 35-point bonus
When your upper subtotal is 63 or more, add 35 bonus points. This is separate from the Yahtzee combination bonus in the lower section.
On the ScorecardGO Yahtzee sheet, the upper bonus is calculated automatically when your subtotal qualifies.
Strategy tips
- Aim for at least three of each number early in the game
- Do not waste a high row (like sixes) on a weak roll if you can score it elsewhere
- If you are short of 63 late in the game, prioritize the rows where you still have open categories
