Official Yahtzee Scoring Rules

Yahtzee is scored on a sheet with 13 categories. Each turn you roll five dice up to three times, then write your score in one category. Every category can only be used once per game.

Upper section (ones through sixes)

For each number category, add up only the dice showing that number:

• Ones — sum of all 1s
• Twos — sum of all 2s
• Threes — sum of all 3s
• Fours — sum of all 4s
• Fives — sum of all 5s
• Sixes — sum of all 6s

If you cannot score in a row, enter 0. The upper section total is the sum of those six rows. See our upper section bonus guide for the 35-point bonus.

Lower section combinations

Grand total and winner

Add the upper section total (including any bonus), the lower section total, and any Yahtzee bonus points. After all 13 categories are filled, the highest grand total wins.

Common scoring mistakes

• Writing a running total instead of the score for that category only
• Forgetting that a scratched category still counts as 0
• Scoring a full house when you only have three of a kind (must be exactly 3 + 2)
